Can flu shot cause Hiv Rapid Test false positive?

Question:

I had a rapid test at 6 weeks and it's negative. I am planning to do another one at 12 weeks. I heard some people mentioned that a flu vaccine may cause false positive for the rapid test.

Question: Should I take a flu shot now? There will be still 6 weeks away from my next rapid test.

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I will try and answer your questions as best I can.

You asked a great question! Flu shots do not affect HIV testing. Only 4 things affect HIV testing:

  1. If you are on antiviral medical for Hepatitis C
  2. If you are currently receiving chemotherapy
  3. If you have taken Post Exposure Prophylaxis
  4. If you have an underlying immunodeficiency

In these cases, testing at 6 months is recommended for conclusive results. Since flu shots are not a part of this list, your test results will not be affected and testing at 12 weeks is conclusive.
