Hi there and thanks for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver with your questions. We're happy to help!
Here in Canada, all tests are considered conclusive 3 months after your most recent exposure. However, there are only 4 situations that can affect your window period. They are:
- If you are receiving antiviral treatment for Hepatitis C
- If you are receiving treatment for Cancer (chemotherapy)
- If you are receiving P.E.P. treatment for HIV
- If you have been diagnosed with an immunodeficiency disorder. These are very serious and are most often diagnosed at birth.
If any of these 4 situations apply to you, then your window period would get extended to 6 months. If not, then your window period would still be 3 months after your exposure. The reason your window period gets extended is that these situations can sometimes delay your body's production of HIV antibodies, which is how many HIV tests detect the presence of HIV in your body. However, since your potential exposure was 3 years ago, any HIV test you took now would give you a conclusive result. There is no need for further testing.
I hope I was able to answer your question, and feel free to contact us with any further concerns.
