Can Methotrexate for RA affect HIV AB 1&2 result and give false negative?

Question:

Good Morning.,

I had a possible exposure in Jan 2006 and after 9 years, because of symptoms like neck lymph swell, I have taken a HIV AB 1&2 test in July 2015 which is Non Reactive. I am on Methotrexate (15mg) since 2011 for RA. Please advise if Methotrexate may affect the HIV AB test result and my non reactive may be false? If so do I have to do any other specific test and what test is that?

Answer:

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are happy to help answer your questions. We are not sure what kind of exposure you had in 2009 but we have included this Risk Chart so you can learn more about the activities that can and cannot pass on HIV. The results of your HIV test, which you carried out in July 2015, can be considered conclusive if you have not had any other exposures between April 2015 and July 2015. We want to let you know that the results of all HIV tests can be considered conclusive when the test has been carried out at least 3 months after your most recent exposure, or later.

Here is a great resource we have used to help support our answers.

We trust we have answered your questions and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Sincerely,

Marta
