Cut possible needle please help

Hi there

I was abroad at water park when I my finger started hurting I looked at my finger it looked like dint where top layer of skin at come off in shape on little cut was as deep as the first layer of skin from what I could see my fears are that needle could been stabbed into my finger. Without my knowing

My question is with little wound on the finger from possible needle stick put me at risk and does that need testing very anxious around this

Second question would I know if someone pricked me all I see was little cut wound where skin come off with little dint at top of my finger

Third how deep is deep to be risk would cut I describe be entry point please help I’m so anxious

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about a needle stick injury. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be High Risk (Evidence of transmission through these activities and is the majority of cases of transmission).

Theoretically, if you were pricked by a used needle this would present an opportunity to acquire HIV. Although HIV does not survive long outside the body, HIV fluid can survive over 40 days in a completely sealed environment (i.e syringe) (1).

In a high risk scenario such as exposure to a needle prick there are biomedical approaches such as PrEP and PEP that help lower your risk of acquiring HIV. Refer to your physicians for further information. PEP has be taken within 72 hours after a high risk exposure occurs (2). Any exposure to a needle presents as a risk, the depth of the prick does not change the risk of transmission.

It is helpful to know your status by getting tested in order to decrease your anxiety.

Recommendation: Refer to Physician for HIV test.
