Marijuana & 4th Gen Test, Conclusive?

Question:

Hi,

I was wondering if smoking weed few hours before an HIV test affect the result? I had exposures three years ago with CSWs and tested non reactive nine months ago via 4th generation

Answer:

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the effects of smoking marijuana on the results of a 4th Generation HIV test.

Marijuana does not have any significant short-term or long-term affects on the immune system (1). If you were infected with HIV, your body would produce antibodies to the virus, which would be detectable by the 4th Generation HIV test and remain detectable regardless of marijuana usage. False negative results are extremely rare outside of the window period of the test (2) and most specialists agree that the 4th Generation test is conclusive after 6 weeks. Since you were tested for HIV with the 4th Generation test outside of the window period the negative result of the test is conclusive.

Recommendation: No need for HIV test with the scenario provided, refer to a physician for other health related questions.
