This may be a weird question but i was wondering if its possible to contract HIV or AIDS from cleaning the hair out of a communal shower. i was using a glove and a wire hanger, but my glove broke so i touched the hair and muck from the drain a little bit. as far as i can tell there are no cuts on my finger, and the last person to shower was 20 to 30 minutes ago, but i was wondering if the virus could live in the muck of the hair in the shower, and if im at risk of anything
Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.
There is no risk of acquiring HIV from cleaning hair out of a drain. HIV cannot be transmitted through touching objects or hair as these do not contain HIV. There is no way for the virus to access the bloodstream through the skin.
For more information about HIV you can always visit the AIDS Vancouver website or CATIE.ca.
I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
