My name is Chikondi Fundou from Malawi, i had an unprotected sex with a girl whom i dont know her status, so i went to the clinic within 15 hours after exposure and they prescribed me PEP, so i began the medication right away but after 3 weeks on the medication, foolish enough i went to a friends party and got drunk and stupidly i had another unprotected sex, so my question is should i go to the clinic for another PEP or its okay the PEP i am taking will be enough? and what are the chances that the pep will work because i heard that if you take it more than once the body will get used and the virus will be resistant to the drug?
Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the specifics of PEP use, and if you should continue to use the PEP prescription that you have been given/renew your prescription due to the recent exposure you have had.
It is important to first acknowledge that PEP should not replace other highly effective preventative methods against HIV transmission. Condom use is extremely effective in protecting against HIV risk, and can result in a significantly reduced chance of HIV transmission.
As you have experienced another possible exposure, we would Recommend that you seek out your health care provider for additional HIV testing and a renewal of `your PEP medication. We are unaware of the effect that continued use of PEP may have, and how it may affect HIV transmission. For this reason, we maintain that seeking advice from a medical professional is advisable.
All the best,
