hiv in sugar

if there hiv+ blood on sugar and i put it in my coffee or ate it can you get hiv this way? i know hiv doesn't survive outside the body, but is this a way to get HIV?

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking whether HIV positive bodily fluid in sugar that you put in your coffee is an avenue for HIV transmission.

From the information provided, we determine this scenario to be of No Risk (HIV transmission is not possible in given scenario). HIV is not transmitted through ingestion. You are correct in your assumption that HIV does not survive (long) outside of the human body. In a scenario like the one you have described, there is no absoute way of HIV transmission.

HIV is extremely volatile and does not survive long outside of the human host. HIV positive fluid that have been exposed to oxygen or environmental surfaces undergoes a rapid reduction in concentration, making it no longer transmissable (1). It is also worth noting that HIV is not transmitted through sharing drinks, food, utensils or dishes.

Recommendation: No need for HIV testing for the scenario provided.

All the best,
