HIV Test, Conclusive?

Question:

Hi,

I had protected sex with call girl 25 days back and do not know about her HIV status. Also she lost weight and have cough also in recent months.i got loose motion, itching, feverish in second week and consult with a doctor also.He said it is related to food poison and asked me to check HIV status also. Then I took test on 15th day and the results for P24 combo test is negative. Then i went for annual health checkup and doctor advised to test HIV again. Lab test done through HIV rapid test (23 days) and result is non reactive. But still my mind is not relaxed due to itching in the body and throat infection for last 2 days.Could you tell me,is this result is sufficient to know the HIV status or I need to do again HIV test.If that case ,when should i need to do it ?

Thanks & Regards,
Raj

Answer:

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the conclusiveness of the 4th Generation EIA "DUO"/"COMBO" Test 2 weeks post-exposure and the HIV Rapid Test 3 weeks post-exposure.

The window period for both of these tests is from 4 to 12 weeks. For the 4th Generation EIA "DUO"/"COMBO" Test, most HIV specialists would consider a result conclusive after 6 weeks because the test can detect HIV infection in 99% of people after this amount of time (1). Similarly, the HIV Rapid Test can detect up to 95% of infections within 4-6 weeks (1). Since both of your tests were conducted prior to 6 weeks post-exposure a follow-up test for a conclusive result is recommended.

Recommendation: Refer to Physician for follow-up HIV test 6 weeks after exposure for conclusive results.
