microcytosis implications

Question:

Good evening I had very high risk exposure 140 days ago ( unprotected sex with a HIV+ boy ). I took 7 ELISA 4th gen. Ab/Ag p24 during the last four months. I get my last test result yesterday and it was negative. Do you think microcytosis can delay the serconversion ? Thank you very much.

Answer:

Hello

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline as your source for HIV/AIDS related information.

HIV testing is accurate, specific and reliable. HIV testing is used to detect viral antibodies and genetic material, therefore, microcytosis (where red blood cells are unusually small) would not affect your HIV results. Should you have more questions regarding your test and test results, please contact your health care provider for more detail.

Best wishes, Janet AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
