Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are glad that you carried out your Rapid antibody test at 74 days post-exposure.You have surpassed the time when most people develop detectable antibodies (between 21 and 25 days after exposure), and we can say that it is very unlikely that your results will change, with no new exposures. Further testing may not be required due to any risk of your results changing, but it if would provide you with some relief, the results of all HIV tests can be considered conclusive (most accurate) when carried out 84 days post-exposure or later.

For future reference, using one condom is the most reliable way to reduce your risk of acquiring HIV through sexual intercourse. Using more than one condom may lead to one or all condoms breaking (due to friction), so we have included some additional guidelines for safe condom use here. We would also like to clarify that in situations where you cannot be sure that the condom protected you, carrying out an HIV test is the safest measure. However, when a condom does not break and provides a barrier between the urethra (in your penis) and your partner's body there is no risk of acquiring HIV since, body fluids are not exchanged directly.

We trust we have answered your questions, and thanks you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
