Scared that I caught an STD

Question:

Hi, so I hooked up with someone from a gay app. They gave me oral sex, a rather rough handjob, and tried to insert my penis into their anus. When they tried to insert my penis into their anus, it did make contact, but there was no penetration. After the encouter, I noticed that my penis was really sore (kind of like a burning sensation), and my mouth had some dry red patches in the corner. I have been feeling a little ill, but I have also been extremely anxious about contracting an STD from this encounter. Should I get tested?

Answer:

Hi there, and thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your HIV/AIDS related health information.

It seems you're concerned about the possibility of STI or HIV transmission.

On this forum we focus solely on HIV risk. For more information about sexually transmitted infections, I would encourage you to check out Smart Sex Resource.

With regards to HIV, receiving oral sex is considered a Negligible Risk activity. This means that the practices assigned to this risk level present a potential for HIV transmission because they do involve the exchange of body fluids. However, there has never been a confirmed report.

As for the symptoms you are experiencing, we at AIDS Vancouver are not healthcare providers, so cannot comment on them. In regards to HIV, HIV infections are never diagnosed based on symptoms alone, simply because the symptoms of an HIV infection are quite common to many other common medical conditions. Testing is the only way to diagnose an HIV infection. If you're concerned about any symptoms you're experiencing, we'd encourage you to see a healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider can also provide you with STI testing.

I would also encourage you to check out the following resources for more information about HIV:

Thank you again for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline Online
