Sex with someone possibly recently infected

Question:

10 days ago, I had protected anal sex and unprotected oral sex with a men(men with men), and I recently have found out that he just had sex with the other guy 4 days ago before having with me. So this makes me worried that if he just infected HIV with the sex he had before me, he will have a high viral load and increase my risk of contracting HIV? Please note that I have 2 mouth ulcers (casual sore, in healing) on my lips.

Answer:

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It sounds like you are concerned on the likelihood of acquiring HIV from your sexual experiences.

From what you have told me, you had both protected anal sex and unprotected oral sex with a man, but are concerned because he engaged in sexual activities with another partner 4 days beforehand. Anal sex with a condom and giving oral sex is seen as a Low Risk activity as there have been a few reports of infection and there is an exchange of body fluids. On the other hand receiving oral sex is seen as a Negligible Risk as even though there is an exchange of body fluids there has never been a confirmed report of infection. Here at AIDS Vancouver we encourage routine testing and it might be helpful for you to pursue HIV testing if you are truly concerned that you may have acquired HIV.
