Third generation detection

Question:

HAS HIV EVER BEEN detected in the first40-42 days with a third generation elisa??? I had a test after 40 days..I had unprotected sex with a girl...I am a male..i tested negative after 40 days...has it ever been detected that soon?

Answer:

Hi there, and thanks a lot for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for you HIV/AIDS related health information.

It sounds like you are concerned about the reliability on your test results.

Actually, 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks post exposure. Most people develop detectable antibodies in 21-days. The test that you had looks for these antibodies. Your test on the 40th day falls in this window period of 4 - 6 weeks. Your test came back negative at a time when 95% of infections are found. This is good! The Elisa 3rd Generation has a 99.8% accuracy.
