I had unprotected vaginal sex with a female whose hiv status i dont know.it was a very short, soft session, only once.I am a 19 year old male. what are the chances of me catching the virus? whats the fastest way i can get tested to know my results? Thanks.

Answer:

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about acquiring HIV from unprotected vaginal sex. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be High Risk (Evidence of transmission through these activities and is the majority of cases of transmission).

HIV transmission occurs when bodily fluid containing HIV has direct access to the bloodstream of and individual through a high risk activity.

In this scenario the transmission equation is satisfied as the exchange of bodily fluid occurs through unprotected vaginal sex.

If you are someone that continuously engages in high risk activity such as unprotected vaginal sex there are biomedical approaches such as PrEP and PEP that help lower your risk of acquiring HIV. PEP is a method of taking antiretroviral medicines (ART) after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected (2). PEP is only effective up to 72 hours post exposure to high risk activity. PrEP should be considered if you consistently engage in high risk activities PrEP is taken as a daily medicine to prevent HIV (3). PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout your body (3). When taken daily, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV from sex or injection drug use. PrEP is much less effective when it is not taken consistently (3). Refer to your physicians for further information.

Recommendation: Refer to Physician for HIV test.
