will medication affect HIV test result

Question:

I'm taking a kind of anti-anxiety medicine which is called Estazolam, will it affect my testing result that is negative after more than three months.

Answer:

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your questions. We're happy to help.

In short, no, the medication you're on will not affect the window period of your HIV test. The only drugs that affect the window period are ones that alter your immune system and immune responses, thus, interfering with your bodies ability to produce antibodies against HIV. There are 4 situations were testing is required past 3 months and up until 6 months. They are as follows:

1) If someone is on antiviral treatment for Hepatitis C

2) If someone is being treated for cancer with chemotherapy or other immune modulating drugs

3) Someone who's taking PEP/PREP treatment for HIV

4) Someone has a diagnosed immunodeficiency disease.

I hope this helped!

Sincerely,

Christina
