Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your questions!

Unfortunately I can't give you a numerical likelihood of you having acquired HIV. What I can tell you, however, is the risk levels associated with the activities you have engaged in. Protected vaginal sex is considered to be a low risk activity. The risk involved here is from the chance of a condom breaking, leaking, being used improperly, etc. In terms of giving oral sex, this is also considered to carry a low risk. This is because, for example, if you were to have a deep cut in your mouth (like from stitches, heavy dental work, etc.) this would be a space in which his bodily fluids may enter your bloodstream. Keep in mind that saliva works to help prevent the transmission of HIV, which is why this is a low risk scenario. Knowing this, it is in your power to determine whether or not you should seek out a test after this exposure. Here at AIDS Vancouver we always recommend regular HIV and STI testing for all those who are sexually active!

In terms of your sneezing, we don't go by symptoms to determine status here at AIDS Vancouver. This is because some people carrying the virus show symptoms, others don't, and they often get confused with other illnesses like the flu or allergies. If your symptoms are really bothersome, it may be in your best interest to visit a healthcare professional to get them checked out!

I hope I have answered your questions to your satisfaction. If you have any more, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Wishing you the best,

Caroline
