Hi there,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS-related information.

Unfortunately, we do not know for sure if these activities with a condom are 100% safe. The explanation below should clarify that for you.

Let me answer each of these questions separately.

1) Using condoms for vaginal intercourse is considered to be the safest way to protect both you and your partner from the transmission of HIV. The reason it is considered the safest way possible is because there are a number of caveats that goes along with it. The first being, the expiry date of the condom. The second is how it is applied. And the third is how it is removed (removed while penis is still erect). If all of these conditions are met, HIV transmission is extremely unlikely to happen.

2) Using a condom for oral sex depends on whether you are receiving or giving. If you are receiving oral sex, there is a negligible risk of HIV transmission. What this means is that even though body fluids are mixed, there has never been a confirmed report of transmission in this manner. Additionally, saliva contains an enzyme that inhibits the growth of HIV. If you are giving oral sex, there is a slightly higher risk (although reports of infection in this manner are very very few).

Using a condom for either oral sex or intercourse does not necessarily protect you or your partner from transmitted sexually transmitted infections.

We encourage all sexually active individuals to be tested for all sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, on a regular basis as part of your body health maintenance.

I trust that I have answered your question, however if you have any more, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

All the best,

Maggie
