Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your question.

It seems you are concerned that being tested 15 months after an activity might not provide reliable results. We are glad to provide some information.

Getting tested early is mainly encouraged for two main reasons. The first one is that it reduces the anxiety of not knowing. The second reason is that it prevents new infections. If a person knows their status early they can take preventative measures to protect themselves or others from new transmission. However getting tested after 15 months will still give accurate results. The results are reliable and also conclusive.

Further information can be obtained from[ catie](http://www.catie.ca/en/pif/fall-2010/detecting-hiv-earlier-advances-hiv-testing) and the AIDS Vancouver website. If you have further questions feel free to contact us again.

Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
