Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about whether you should retest for HIV after having a 4th Generation test. From the information given, you received negative results from the 4th Generation test the day after possible exposure. 4th Generation tests can detect antigens 3-4 days after possible exposure, and can detect antibodies 3-4 weeks onwards. Testing the day after possible exposure will not yield conclusive results. At 6 weeks, the 4th Generation test is considered to be conclusive and 99.9% accurate.

From the information given, this scenario is determined to be high risk (Evidence of transmission through these activities and is the majority of cases of transmission). Unprotected anal or vaginal sex is deemed to be a high risk activity.

Recommendation: For conclusive results, do a 4th Generation test at 6 weeks onwards or refer to a physician for more personalized answers.

Regards,
AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Ashley
