Hi, I had unprotected sex on April 2016 and 2 months after that I had a Miningitis, Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccination.

I want to know:
1. Do the vaccinations have affect on HIV test?

2. Which type of HIV test is more reliable?

3. When should I take the HIV test?

I would appreciate it if you answer me
Thanks

Hi there and thank you for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver with your questions! We're happy to help.

I understand that the process of HIV testing can be confusing and nerve-wracking, so I'm more than happy to answer these questions for you.

1) No, these vaccinations do not affect the window period of HIV testing. There are only 4 cases that prolong the window period of HIV testing from 3 months to 6 months and they are:

* if you are on antiviral drugs for Hepatitis C

* if you're on PEP/PREP for HIV

* if you're being treated for cancer with chemotherapy

* if you have an immunodeficiency disease (you would know, as they're diagnosed during infancy and childhood)

2) All HIV tests reliable. Some tests have more accurate results sooner than others, such as the 4th generation combo tests.

3) All HIV tests are considered to be conclusive at 12 weeks post exposure. That being said, most specialists in the world consider the 4th generation combo test to be conclusive at 6 weeks. Further, most HIV antibody tests (rapid tests, and ELISA 3rd generation tests) are around 95% accurate at just 4-6 weeks post exposure, so an early test result is unlikely to change by 12 weeks. If you're concerned, don't wait to get tested! Just make sure to confirm your test at the conclusive window period (12 weeks).

I hope this helped!
Sincerely,
Christina
