Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver, I'm happy to address your concerns. I hope to reduce your feelings of worry and fear as we work through your risk together.

1. There are many different HIV tests, so without knowing which exact test you got, we cannot know the accuracy. In Canada, the tests we have available have accuracy ranging from 99.6% to 99.9% accurate. The most efficient test is the 4th generation test, but many individuals receive the 3rd generation test, which is 99.8% accurate. Regardless of the testing you received, you should feel confident in the test results as being true. With these tests, 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks.

2. Yes, test results are considered to be conclusive at 12 weeks. However, since you tested negative at 7.5 weeks, this is still a very strong indicator of your status.

3. Giving oral sex is considered to be a low risk activity, which means that there have only been a few reports of infection, usually due to certain identifiable conditions. It's great that you have been tested, and we encourage follow-up testing as well.
