Hello, this is really embarassing but i'am going crazy thinking i have aids, 10 years ago, when i was 8 - 9 years old i was sexually active it was with boys my age and there was no penetration as far as i remember, now i'am worried i have HIV because i have something i believe is "Oral hairy leukoplakia" it's on my right and left side of tongue, it's not much it isnt thick either, but it looks just like "leukoplakia" i've been using "dip" smokeless tobacco for 3 years now, maybe that's the cause? i rarely catch colds, like 4-5 times a year maybe and i'am very skinny and tall i have like 4% body fat, my question is, if i had AIDS or HIV would i have noticed it by now? i don't have any skin rash just the regular acne. 2 years ago i had a blood test,(something about lymphocytes) they took alot of blood and it came back saying that i have Epsteinn barr, if i had HIV would this test detect it?

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I'll be more than glad to address your concerns.

It is hard to tell when HIV would progress to AIDS, as this varies greatly between people. If you are worried that you may be living with HIV, then I recommend having an HIV test done to ease your mind. Most people living with HIV show no symptoms, until they experience serve immune deficiency at the AIDS stage. It is always good to know your HIV status, since having HIV is not a death sentence anymore. Many people living with HIV are living normal and healthy lives taking one pill a day, and have the life expectancy of the general population.

Your Epsteinn barr test would not detect the HIV virus. You would need to ask for an HIV test. The "4th generation test", also known as the "duo test" is the most accurate test up to date, and it is considered conclusive after at least 3 months post-exposure.

Sincerely,

Ali
