Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your question.

You may be happy to learn that HIV cannot be passed on through chaptstick. This is because the HIV virus dies when it is exposed to air. Furthermore, the virus would have no way of entering your bloodstream. This is also assuming that the owner of the chapstick was HIV positive as well.

The way to acquire HIV through transmission is as follows:
1) A specific bodily fluid from someone who is HIV positive (e.g. blood, semen, rectal/vaginal secretions, pre-cum)
2) Is transferred via a high-risk activity (unprotected sex, sharing needles)
3) That allows the virus to enter your bloodstream (through your vagina, anus, urethra in penis, deep open cuts/sores, mucosal membranes, points of needle injection)

Please note that for HIV to be transmitted, there must be all 3 of the above parts.

I hope that I have answered your question and cleared up any confusion you may have had. If you have further questions please feel free to post on this forum again, visit our website http://www.aidsvanocuver.org, or call us for immediate answers.

Sincerely,

Caroline
