Hello, I am now extremely nervous that I might got affected by HIV. About two weeks ago I had sex with a guy, it was on the last day of my period, but I was not bleeding before. We used a condom; however he used his saliva as lubricant outside the condom. After a while he noticed that I bleed a little so he stopped. Later that night I start bleeding again and only stopped until the next day. I am not sure if he is HIV positive but he told me that he was having some allergy effects and a week later he said he vomit. I am really scared now and I am afraid of go for a test. Plus it has only been 2 weeks the result might not be accurate.
Could you please help and advise if I am at high risk?
Thank you very much!

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It seems you are concerned about contracting HIV from a sex activity using a condom. We are glad to provide some information.

Engaging in sex using a condom is regarded as a Low Risk activity. This means that there has been a few reports of HIV infection from this activity. However one can not determine HIV status from symptoms. Symptoms can be a result of other viral infections not related to HIV so the best way to determine one's status is to get tested. There are rapid HIV tests that are very accurate that can be done within a period of less than four weeks after exposure. This will help to set your mind at rest.

At Aids Vancouver we encourage people to use HIV testing as a regular health maintenance routine. This means getting tested once or twice a year. This will ensure that any infection can be detected early and help provided in time.

Our online forum has postings related to your question that you can read for additional information. If you have further questions feel free to contact us again.
