I've read that the antigen part of the rapid 4th gen test isn't terribly sensitive and can give false negative results. Have you heard anything about this? I had a neg 4th gen rapid test at 6 weeks after a possible needle stick. If i was just relying on the antibody part of the trst, how accurate would my result be? I plan to get tested at 13 weeks to be sure? Thanks for your time

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

To our knowledge, the 4th generation combo test is one of the most advanced and accurate tests that we have today. If conducted within the window period of 4-12 weeks post-exposure, and if carried out in a professional hospital or clinic environment, this test has a 99.9% accuracy. All tests that are conducted at or after the 3 month (12 week) post-exposure period are considered conclusive.

We highly recommend that you take HIV-related information that you find online with a grain of salt. Anybody can write anything on the internet and often times there is no validity to any of the claims or information provided. At AIDS Vancouver, we closely follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control in regards to all the information that we provide.

The negative results that you have received are great indicators of your HIV status and are unlikely to change in the future in the absence of any new exposures. You may choose to get tested again at or after the 12 week post-exposure for your peace of mind.

I trust that I have answered your questions. For additional information on HIV risk and testing, feel free to contact us again. You can also visit our website at http://www.aidsvancouver.org.

In health,

Malath
