IDK who to talk to about it...I can't sleep. I even had some night sweats....i feel desperate..i just want to burst in tears..I need help. I feel like is affecting my everyday life and mental state.

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I can see that you are very worried about your HIV status, and I hope my answer can help alleviate your stress.

An antibody test at 5 weeks is highly accurate (over 95% accuracy). Most people that have newly acquired HIV test positive on antibody tests as early as 3 to 4 weeks. Therefore, your test is a very strong indication that your HIV status is negative.

As far as your symptoms, we do not use any symptoms to indicate HIV status. Despite the common belief, most people that acquire HIV show no symptoms. Any symptoms that you experience could simply be due to a cold, flu, stress, etc. The only accurate way of knowing your HIV status is by testing, not by looking for symptoms. It would be a good idea to have one final test at 12 weeks, which would be a "conclusive" test. Since your first test was negative with over 95% accuracy, most likely your final test should also come back negative. After that, hopefully you will have a complete peace of mind about your HIV status and you won't have a reason to worry about this anymore.

Sincerely,

Ali
