Hi there,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS-related information.

That is a very good question, and my answer for you would be that it depends on the public health jurisdiction you live in. Here is information from the Canadian Public Health Agency explaining the types of tests available for Canadians: http://www.cpha.ca/en/programs/portals/hiv/prevention/testing/d02.aspx. Here is also some more in-depth information provided by CATIE (Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange).

If you write us back and provide us with information about the city or town you live in, we could provide you with more specific details. Or if you have questions about a specific test, we can help you find the answer. Wherever you live, note that so long as a test is administered by a trained person in a healthcare setting, the test is approved. At home testing is not yet officially approved in Canada. Also note that to ensure the most accuracy, we recommend people test within 12 weeks post-exposure.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best

Maggie
