Hi there and thanks for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.

First of all, a commercial sex worker is not necessarily at a higher risk for HIV than anyone else. Anyone can pass HIV, no matter what occupation, age, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. It is the activity (i.e. unprotected anal/vaginal intercourse, needle sharing) that poses an HIV risk, not the individual(s).

You are to be congratulated for using a condom as it is the safest way to prevent HIV transmission.

Receiving oral sex is considered a negligible risk, meaning that, although there is an exchange of body fluids, there has been a confirmed report of HIV transmission by this activity. In your particular case, where she "grinded her teeth with penis", the risk for transmission would only increase if she actually caused bleeding sores. From what you describe, this did not happen. Spraying your penis with alcohol does not reduce the risk of HIV.

Although the risk for HIV is low, I would encourage you to be tested for all Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's), as well as HIV. In fact, we encourage all sexually active individuals be tested on a regular basis. Depending on the individual, this may be annually, bi-annually or every 3-4 months.

I trust I have addressed your concerns however, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.

In good health,

Jonathan, AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
