I went to a village for some official work & went to small barber to get shaved. When he almost finished shaving, I noticed that his finger was bleeding & I know small cuts are not risk, but it cut was bit deep, I don't know how he managed to work with that finger. My concern is that I also got some cuts during shaving, in case his blood came in contact with my cuts can I get Hiv
I am really very scared, Please help

Thank you for your question and using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline,

It sounds like you are distressed about this situation you encountered at the barbershop. I am here to help you and I hope I can alleviate some concerns you have.

So from what you have told me, the barber had a deep cut on his finger, and you are worried that the blood from the deep cut encountered your cuts.
From this, you are at no risk of having HIV.
In order for you to have acquired HIV, your cuts would have to be very deep (requiring medical attention like stitches or surgery), and allow direct access to the bloodstream.
It seems like your cuts were actually superficial cuts, so there was no way that the Barber's possible HIV positive blood could have entered your bloodstream from your superficial cuts.

You can read over this chart that describes HIV transmission:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
Also, if you have more questions about transmission you can check out our website!
I hope I was some help to you. Thanks for your questions again!
