Hi there,

I suppose I'm just a tad worried. Over the last year I've had changes in my bowel habits which involve frequent straining to expel my stool and a feeling of not being completely empty afterwards. It may be an obstruction. I've heard diarrhea is a symptom of hiv during the later stages. Do you know of people who are infected that suffer from difficulty having bowel movements? I'm just curious as to whether or not there could be any connection.

Regards,
Dan

Hello,

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver for your HIV/AIDS related information.

We are not doctors and thus we cannot provide you information on what may be causing your irregular bowel movements. We would encourage you to discuss this with your health care professional as it could be a symptom of another type of disease or illness. However, we can tell you that diarrhoea or bowel obstruction are not symptoms of HIV. There are no clinically defined symptoms of HIV.

We advise you to take caution when finding clinical information on HIV online or through other media sources. There are many websites with outdated or inaccurate information.
For reliable information on HIV/AIDS, we recommend that you visit the following websites:

http://www.avert.org (International AIDS Charity AVERT)
http://www.catie.ca (Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange)

I trust I have answered all your questions. Should further inquiries arise, please don't hesitate to contact us again.
