I had a few appointments recently with escorts. Tell me is the rate of HIV high amongst touring sex workers from Europe and would you know if a condom broke during anal/vaginal sex?

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver, I'm happy to address your concerns.

In regards to your question of the rate (prevalence) of HIV amongst sex workers, there are many variables that come into play. In many countries in Europe, the data collection of prevalence is not as comprehensive, which means the data may not reflect the reality of how many commercial sex workers are living with HIV (under reported). It is both difficult and harmful to generalize sex workers with numbers, as it adds to the stigmatization of commercial sex workers (for example, saying "the majority of sex workers are living with HIV" - we do not want to do this.) Some helpful information may be found at **

With that said, it's important to understand your specific circumstance by the activity, rather than by the person you engaged in sexual activity with. It's great to hear that you have used a condom, as it's the most effective way to prevent HIV transmission through sexual activity. In regards to your question about knowing if a condom broke - Yes, you would know, because the ripping, tearing, or puncturing of a condom will create a popping sensation. Two ways to tell if a condom broke is by:

* holding it up to the light (to check for holes or tears that are hard to see)

* filling the condom with water (if there are holes or tears, water will start draining out of the condom)

Here at AIDS Vancouver, we encourage individuals to incorporate HIV testing in health checkups. For your own peace of mind, we do encourage HIV testing.
