i was using a public CR and when it was my turn the toilet seat was kinda dirty and had a little gooey substance. i wiped it off with wet tissue ( didnt press the tissue to o hard on the seat) and used the toilet. after using the cr, i went out and forgot to disinfect my other hand which made contact with the tissue and accidentally made contact with my hands to my mouth after say 20 mins and panicked when i realized i had a little wound near my lip and just made contact with it. do you think this is alarming? thanks i didnt really directly touched the substance though just the tissue.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about acquiring HIV through contact of a wet tissue to a wound. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be No Risk (transmission of HIV is not possible in the given scenario).

The scenario mentioned above does not meet the three components of the transmission equation. The equation requires bodily fluid (possibly this gooey substance), a high risk activity, and direct access to the bloodstream (wound near lip) (1). There was no risky activity involved in the scenario, therefore the transmission equation is not satisfied. Please consider this quote from CDC " "HIV does not survive long outside the human body (such as on surfaces), and it cannot reproduce outside a human host”(2). The exposure to oxygen renders the HIV inactive in the environment. HIV is not transmitted through sharing toilets (3).

Recommendation: No need for HIV test with the scenario provided, refer to a physician for other health related questions.

Regards,

AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Danielle
