Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your questions.

Kissing and touching is not a risk for HIV transmission. The 3 things you need for HIV transmission can be seen below:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
Also, touching yourself after you've touched a cell phone does not pose a risk, because of the components above. The HIV virus also dies when it is exposed to air, so even if there were bodily fluids on your phone, it would not pose a risk.

Yes, it is safe (in terms of not transmitting HIV) to make love to your girlfriend provided that you have not had a recent other exposure.

I hope I have answered your questions. Please feel free to write back or call us if you have any more. You can also visit our website http://www.aidsvancouver.org for more information.

All the best,

Caroline
