Hi there, and thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your HIV/AIDS related health information. It seems you have a question about the possibility of HIV transmitting during an encounter. We're happy to answer your question for you.

Because the condom broke during your encounter, this activity is classified as high risk. High risk means that of the transmissions that have occurred, most have occurred due to activities such as these. To see the risks associated with many other activities, we encourage you to check out our [risk assessment page](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart). This is true even if your exposure was relatively short (30 seconds).

Normally, we'd recommend you seek out PEP after this high risk encounter. Unfortunately PEP is only effective if administered 72 hours post exposure. We would still recommend that you seek out medical attention after this encounter, however. You'll need to go for HIV testing. Most HIV tests are not considered conclusive until at least 3 months post exposure, so you'll unfortunately need to wait this long to know you status conclusively.

Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your questions, we hope that have been answered fully, and that you have a bit of direction on what to do from here.

Trevor
