I know there has been lots of talk about Oraquick, but I am a little bit confused. They say that it has 91.7% accuracy for positively identifying people with HIV. However, I don't feel like that is very assuring. Can the Oraquick test be considered conclusion the it doesn't identify 8% of people who are positive.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as your source for HIV/AIDS related information. I would love to answer your question!

AIDS Vancouver does not recommend the use of home test kits like the Oraquick as it is not approved in Canada. Also, when using home testing kits, there is a high chance for human error and consequently, inaccurate results. For accurate test results, AIDS Vancouver recommends partnering with a medical professional and having testing done at an HIV test site, Emergency Room, clinic or laboratory. When performed by a medical professional, HIV tests are very reliable. Having face-to-face contact also offers you the chance to ask questions so that any concerns may be addressed and to receive counseling in the event of a positive result.

If you live in British Columbia, you may refer to this [Clinic Finder](http://smartsexresource.com/get-tested/clinic-finder) to help locate an HIV test site nearby. If you live in any other regions of Canada, you may use this [HIV Test Site Finder](https://aso411.ca/) or if you live in the United States, you may use the [CDC Test Site Locator](https://gettested.cdc.gov/). If you live outside of North America, I encourage you to speak to your local medical professional regarding your HIV exposure and testing.

I hope I have answered your questions today. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

Best wishes,

Mary
