Hi there.
Is wearing condom protected you 100% from HIV transmission? If no, in what case does wearing condom still expose to the virus?

I also learn that other STDs can be infected even when your wear condom. eg herpes? But not being sure which type of STDs.

Can expert please explain to me.

Thank you very much for your time and patience!.

Hi there, thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for HIV and AIDS related information.

To answer your question, if the condom is used properly and does not tear or break, yes it will protect you 100% from HIV transmission. If the condom breaks, slips off, is taken off when the penis is flaccid and not still erect, or if the condom is expired, there may be a risk for HIV transmission.

With respect to sexually transmitted infections (STI's), by wearing a condom you do greatly reduce the chance of infection. There is still a risk, while lower, for some STI's including Herpes, syphilis and gonorrhoea.

We do recommend to everybody who is sexually active to be tested for all STI's, including HIV, on a regular basis as part of continued health care prevention and maintenance.

I hope that answers your question. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us again or visit [www.smartsexresource.com](www.smartsexresource.com) for addition reliable information to do with STI's.

In health,

Arne, AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
