Hi there,

I had a broken condom incident with a CSW in a high HIV prevalence area in India. I am a male and was having vaginal sex when the condom broke and I was inside her with the broken condom for less than a minute. I have taken a 4th generation HIV 1 & 2 Antibody p24 antigen Combo test at 7 weeks(50 days) post exposure. The result of the test is Non-Reactive.

Some websites say that the 4th generation test is accurate any day 4 weeks post exposure and I don't need any more testing and some say that no test is accurate before the 3 months mark. And here in India everyone suggests a 6 months window period.

I am very much confused. Could you please suggest me how good is my 7 week negative combo test? Have you heard of someone with a negative at 7 week go on and test positive for HIV at the 3 or 6 months mark?

Thank you.

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your questions.

It sounds like you have been given a lot of mixed information! I'm glad you have posted on this forum, and I hope that I can clear up your understandable confusion.

You may first be happy to learn that having sex with a condom is considered low risk, even if the condom breaks. However, I'm very glad you got tested! We encourage regular STI and HIV testing for all those that are sexually active. In terms of your testing, here in BC most specialists consider this test conclusive after 6 weeks post-exposure- so your results are probably accurate. That being said, however, official British Columbia guidelines recommend re-testing at 12 weeks for completely conclusive results. For this reason you may wish to consider getting one more test after 12 weeks.

Lastly, I have never personally heard of someone with a negative at week 7 turning into a positive upon further testing, but in reality it is possible if the test was done incorrectly or if there was a false negative present. In saying this though, it may not be wise to dwell on the "what ifs" of testing scenarios, and trust in your conclusive results at 12 weeks.

I hope I have answered your questions! If you have any more, please feel free to post on this forum again or visit our website for more information.

Sincerely,

Caroline
