I am 24 year old male. Just 24 hours back I had intercourse with one commercial sex worker. I used condom for intercourse, but meanwhile when I removed my penis and inserted again at that moment my head of the penis inserted and I found that condom has broken and immediately I stop there and bring out my penis outside. I was not ejaculated till that time. After that we completed the session with another fresh condom. I asked her medical history also, and she told me the used to go for regular check up. And I washed my penis in dettol soap and liquid and washed nicely what should I do now please help me.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I will try and answer your questions as best I can.

It is great to hear you quickly changed your condom after it broke. Using a condom, despite it breaking is definitely better than no condom at all! Since the first condom was broken it would be considered unprotected vaginal intercourse and this would be a high risk activity. Washing the penis wouldn't prevent you from getting HIV since it would already be in your bloodstream. Sex trade workers often do get tested more often than the average person, and it is important to keep in mind that HIV can impact anyone, regardless of profession, gender, sexual orientation, etc. The only way to be certain of ones status is to get tested.

Getting tested would be your next step in being pro-active with your health. There are many tests out there. We recommend either a Rapid (test results are immediate) or 3rd Generation (ELISA) test. The tests can be done 4 weeks to 3 months (although up to 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks) after activity. Most people develop detectable antibodies in 21-25 days. The World Health Organization Guideline considers all tests conclusive at 12 weeks.

Thanks for contacting us at AIDS Vancouver Helpline and I hope I have answered your questions. For further information you can check our website at http://www.aidsvancouver.org[www.aidsvancouver.org](www.aidsvancouver.org).
