Hi guys,

I wanted to ask you some questions.
1) I was drunk and I kissed (really deep and for a couple of minutes) guy, whose HIV status I don't know, but let's say, he was positive and he didn't know about it. I am worried because I can't remember, because of drunkness, if there was any blood, but I am suffering from cuts in my mouth, so it is really probably that there was some. How many of blood must be there transmitted to be exposed to some risk?
2) I come home in the early morning, so I brushed my teeth maybe after 10 hours after the incident. Could it affect anything?

Thank you very much!

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about your risk of HIV acquisition from deep kissing (with the possible presence of blood).

From the information given, this scenario is determined to be No Risk: (Transmission of HIV is not possible with the given scenario. (No exchange of bodily fluid)).

Kissing with the exchange of blood is considered to be a Low Risk activity (Evidence of transmission occurs through these activities when certain conditions are met), and does meet the requirements for our [Transmission Equation](https://www.aidswindsor.org/healthy-me/hiv-transmission/).

Please consider the following by the CDC: Deep, open-mouth kissing if both partners have sores or bleeding gums and blood from the HIV-positive partner gets into the bloodstream of the HIV-negative partner. Yet, HIV is not spread through saliva (1).

It appears as though in this scenario there was not a noticeable amount of blood, or enough to remember. For this reason, we would maintain that this is a No Risk scenario. However, for an instance in which there is a noticeable amount of blood during deep kissing, we would then recommend HIV testing for your safety.

Recommendation: No need for HIV testing for this scenario, please refer to physician for more personalized answers.

All the best,
AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Cody
