hi thanks a lot for your work. i am really worried about the incident that happened today. a deliveryman with some food stuff came to deliver. he handed me a paper to sign. i took the paper and there was nothing so i put the paper on the ground and then sign it. while signing he talked to me and i looked upward and then i felt something in my eye. before i saw him bleeding. so if anyhow his blood flew and came to my eye, is there any hiv risk. can you plz provide me details. thanks a lot.

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are happy to help answer your questions. This is considered a no-risk exposure for acquiring HIV.

For a risk of HIV transmission to exist, 3/3 parts must be present in an exposure:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
In your exposure:

* Body fluid(e.g. blood) is exposed to the air
* The eye is not a body part that provides direct access to the bloodstream
* There are no high-risk activities (e.g. unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing syringes)

We trust we have answered your question and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Sincerely,

Marta
