Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your question

It seems that you're looking for some information on testing windows following a recent encounter.

The ECLIA test could be either 3rd or 4th generation, and so it is important to know which of these was offered. Your testing centre could give you this information.

At the time of testing, did the centre ask you when the exposure took place? They would be aware of the window periods for each test and it can be expected that they would have administered one appropriate to your situation.

It takes 21-25 days for antibodies to become detectable in blood, and so antibody-only testing (such as the 3rd Generation tests) are not performed until 28 days post exposure.
The 4th Generation tests look for antigens as well as antibodies. Antigens are proteins found on the virus which are detectable at the early stage of an infection, and these disappear as the antibody level rises. So this means that the 4th Generation (or Combo) test, can be administered earlier than the 3rd Gen.

In both cases, Canadian guidelines recommend a follow-up test at 3 months for a conclusive result.

I notice you say "probable infection", but do not detail the encounter. Please take a look at our[ Risk Assessment Chart ](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart)which gives the risk for many common activities. If you did have a high risk exposure, testing is very important. For your negligible and no risk encounters, routine testing is perfectly acceptable.

As mentioned, your testing centre will be able to advise which test was given. If you want to call them to find out, why not book your follow-up at the same time?

Very best wishes
