Hello and thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your question. We are glad to provide some information.

The reason why cuts on a finger are not regarded as high risk and cuts on the penis are considered a risk is the composition of the skin on the different body parts. The finger has got two layers of skin whilst the penis has got one, the epithelial mucous membrane. Epithelial mucous membranes are very thin and can therefore be breached easily by HIV. Any body fluid contact with mucous membranes increase the risk of HIV infection. You can refer to the article by [CATIE](http://www.avert.org/professionals/hiv-science/overview) on the science of HIV for further reading.

Our Helpline Online forum has got postings that are related to your question that you can read for addition information. If you have further questions feel free to contact us again.
