Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to answer your question.

No, even if 2 cuts touch there is no risk of HIV being transmitted. This is for 2 reasons:

1. The HIV virus dies when it is exposed to air. Finger cuts are exposed to air and any blood coming out of them is too.

2. Superficial finger cuts do not provide direct access for the virus to enter the bloodstream. When we talk about cuts, we are referring to deep wounds (like those that need stitches or surgery). Also, the cuts that provide access are usually within the mouth, because this area is not directly exposed to air outside of the body.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have any more, feel free to contact us again or visit our website at http://www.aidsvancouver.org.

In health,

Caroline
