A week ago I engaged in mutual unprotected oral sex with a man. He did not ejacutate into my mouth. However, after about 5-10 minutes after he ejacutate, I forgot that he has ejaculated and performed a brief fellatio until I realized. At that point the semem seems to have dried off from the body heat and I only had a brief contact (5 sec) with his penis. Am I at risk for HIV and should I be tested?

Hi there and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver helpline,

It sounds like you are distressed about being at risk for HIV after engaging in unprotected oral sex. You have a good question and hopefully my answer will help alleviate some discomfort you have.

So from what you have told me, you gave oral sex after 5-10 minutes your partner ejaculated. You would not be at risk for HIV, because the semen was exposed to air for 5-10 minutes, the virus would have also been exposed to air making it no longer able to transmit.
I just want to add that giving oral sex is a low risk activity only when someone has severe, deep cuts in their mouth. For example if someone giving oral sex just had extensive dental work done or cuts that needed stitches, they would be at a low risk for HIV. As for recieving oral sex, it is a neglible risk, meaning that there has never been a confirmed report of someone acquiring HIV from it.

As for getting tested, here at AIDS Vancouver we recommend anyone who is sexually active to get tested.

If you have further questions you can visit our website or give our helpline a call if you are living in the BC area. I hope I was able to answer your questions!
