Hello There,

Thank you for posting on the AIDS Vancouver Helpline Forum.

HIV is a human Immunodeficiency Virus meaning it is a virus that only infects humans. HIV lives in certain body fluids that include blood, semen, pre-cum, rectal secretions, vaginal fluids and breast milk. HIV can be transmitted through these fluids by an activity like unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, sharing needles or mother to child. It finally needs to have direct access to the bloodstream in order to infect such as the entry into a vagina, anus, urethra in the penis, other mucosal membranes, points of needle injection and open cuts and sores.

HIV is not transmitted through touch since skin is a great barrier for HIV transmission. You are not at risk by touching objects and then touching your ear. No HIV-borne fluid was directly entered into your bloodstream.

Hope this Helps!

Please let us know if we can provide any more information. Or if you would like to call and speak to someone at the Helpline, you can do so anonymously and confidentially by calling 604-696-4666, Monday to Friday between 9am-4pm.
