Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline forum.

It sounds like you're wondering about the reliability of the different types of HIV tests.

When taken at the correct time (about 4 weeks to 3 months after exposure- or later- for antibody tests) all HIV tests are at least 99% accurate. So if you are trying to decide on a type of test, the short answer is that they all have a high rate of accuracy and you can't really go wrong with any of them.

If you have received a positive result on a test that you have already taken, the first thing that is likely to happen is that you will be retested. In Canada, a Western Blot test is used to confirm positive results. This test detects HIV antibodies directed against specific proteins. If this test also shows a positive result another will likely be given to confirm this. Basically, if an HIV test comes back positive there will be several other tests to make sure that the positive result was not a false positive. We may suggest partnering with your healthcare professional until consistent test results are achieved.

We know that HIV testing can be a stressful procedure, and hope we have provided you with some clarification about how to achieve conclusive test results. We would be happy to connect you to a local HIV/AIDS service organisation or other healthcare professional in your community, for further support.

For more information on HIV testing or HIV in general you can also check out the AIDS Vancouver website.
