Hello. I have some pretty severe scrapes from masturbation. They have never bled or anything. After working out yesterday at the gym, I showered. I accidently dried my penis/entire body with a used, dirty towel from someone else...have no idea who. Since my penis has scrapes on it, could I put myself at risk for hiv?

Thanks,Andrew

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about acquiring HIV from a dirty towel coming in contact with scrapes on your penis. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be No risk (transmission of HIV is not possible in the given scenario). For a risk to exist, specific HIV positive fluids (semen, pre-cum, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, blood) must come in direct contact with the blood stream of an HIV negative person. The CDC states that "HIV does not survive long outside the human body (such as on surfaces), and it cannot reproduce outside a human host" [1]. Thus, the HIV virus would not be able survive on the surface of a towel.

Recommendation: No need for HIV test with the scenario provided, refer to a physician for other health related questions

Regards,
AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Ashley
