Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

We are happy to help answer your question. There is no risk of acquiring HIV from this exposure. HIV cannot be transmitted in the ways you have described:

HIV cannot be passed on after bodily fluids (e.g. pre-cum, semen, vaginal fluids) have been exposed to the air

HIV cannot be passed on through small cuts on your fingers, or through the skin. Only injuries that require professional medical treatment right away (e.g. stitches, surgery) may provide direct access to the bloodstream.

HIV cannot be acquired from physical contact on the outside of the body (e.g. rubbing through clothes, holding hands)

There are different levels of risk associated with different kind of activities, and you may read about that [here](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart)

Additionally, for a risk of HIV transmission to be present 3/3 parts must be in an exposure:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

We trust we have answered your question and encourage you to contact the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for additional information and resources in the future.

Sincerely,

Marta
