Hello,

Thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS-related information.

The information your doctor provided you is outdated information. HIV test results are considered accurate, reliable, and conclusive after 12 weeks/84 days/3 months post-exposure. This is per the World Health Organization guidelines. After 3 months, test results DO NOT CHANGE. HIV test results that are negative NEVER change after that point. By 8 months, it would have come as a positive or reactive result on your test.

As for your fear, I will tell you how HIV transmission works. For transmission to occur, body fluids of an HIV positive person (i.e. blood, vaginal fluids, semen) need direct access to your bloodstream through an activity like unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. So, as long as you are not having unprotected sex with your friend (meaning, without a condom), you are at NO risk for infection. Feel free to hug, kiss, share food, hold hands, share your home with HIV-positive people.

I trust I've answered your questions, however, if you have others, please don't hesitate to ask.

All the best,

Maggie
